Pedophile Kicked Out of BC Town

CBC || October 19, 2005

A sex offender with a long record of crimes against children has moved out of the British Columbia community of Merritt after receiving threats from local residents.

"Basically our community did what the judicial system wouldn't," said Mayor David Laird. "We said, 'You have no rights. Get out of town.'"

David Caza, 42, moved to Merritt last week after finishing a 10-month sentence for his latest conviction, possessing child pornography. Then the RCMP detachment serving the town of 8,000 released his photo and a warning that he poses a high risk of re-offending.

He had been convicted of 42 offences, including sexual and violent attacks against boys as young as nine.

As the threats against him accumulated, Caza asked to spend last weekend in the Merritt RCMP lockup. He then asked the courts to be moved out of town, and on Tuesday the RCMP escorted him to a halfway house in Kamloops, 70 kilometres away.

During a media interview in Merritt on Tuesday, before Caza left town, a driver passing by shouted threats at the recently released sex offender.

"You're not welcome here, you son of a bitch," the driver said. "Remember my face. I got sons and I got friends with sons. We're on you."

Caza denies being dangerous

Caza denies he is a dangerous sexual offender, and blames the media for putting his life at risk in Merritt.

"I'm in a small town right now, and I've had the support for a long time here, and I'm going to lose it over the media [coverage]," he told a local media outlet. "Then what do I do from here, go to someone else's community?"

But Merritt's mayor has no sympathy for Caza. Laird says a longtime sexual offender who has refused to go through counselling should never have been released from prison.

Now, the RCMP in Kamloops have issued a new public notification about Caza.

Cpl. Fran Bethel says police are taking the unusual step of notifying the public because Caza refused treatment while in prison.

"He isn't the only sexual offender here, but there is a concern that Mr. Caza is an untreated sex offender who is believed to be at high risk to re-offend.

"We were concerned that the public really needed to know where Mr. Caza was residing, so they could be more vigilant if they saw Mr. Caza around the community."

Caza remains on probation with conditions to stay away from children or anywhere they might gather. The RCMP are asking anyone in Kamloops who sees Caza violate any of his conditions to call police immediately.
