Blue LED inventor promises water fuel cells

The Inquirer || October 29, 2005

THE MAN who invented blue LEDs said he and a Tokyo Uni team have created hydrogen from water using gallium nitride crystals.

According to today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun, that could lead to the creatio of fuel cells bbased on water.

Shuji Nakamara, said the paper, had connected gallium nitride crystals with platinum wire and when light is applied the water is electrolysed releasing hydrogen and oxygen.

But the conversion efficiency is still tiny, although the paper said conversion efficiency could be raised to over 20 per cent, which is the threshold required to commercialise the technique
