U.S. soldier could face death penalty in Iraq killings
A U.S. soldier in Iraq could face the death penalty for the alleged murder of two officers.
On Tuesday, a U.S. military investigator recommended that National Guard Staff Sgt. Alberto B. Martinez be charged with two counts of premeditated murder.
The soldier may face a general court martial and could receive the death penalty if he is convicted.
The report outlines how Martinez used an anti-personnel mine and three grenades last June to kill Capt. Phillip T. Esposito and 1st Lieut. Louis E. Allen on a base near the Iraqi city of Tikrit.

The officers died of wounds suffered in the June 7 attack, which was initially thought to have been a mortar attack by militants.
Military investigators later determined the blast pattern was inconsistent with a mortar attack and had been caused by an anti-personnel mine and grenades.
The recommendation for a court martial allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty.
