Law Council criticises proposed sedition changes

Police State

ABC || November 21, 2005

The Law Council of Australia has told a Senate inquiry into the Government's proposed anti-terrorism laws that media organisations should be exempt from the sedition measures contained in the legislation.

A spokesman from the Attorney-General's Department told the inquiry sitting in Sydney there are safeguards in place to protect both journalists and artists.

But Law Society president John North says media organisations may be reluctant to broadcast or publish material because of a fear of being prosecuted.

"We shouldn't have our press having to second guess every five minutes what they're going to publish or otherwise we really do move into infringement of freedom of speech," he said.

A representative from Amnesty International has also told the inquiry the legislation is ill-considered and could turn Australia into a police state.

Robert Toner told the hearing the organisation is particularly concerned by the preventative detention measures and control orders contained in the legislation.

Mr Toner says the laws are intrusive an unnecessary.

He says there are already laws in place that deal with the threat of terrorism.
