Ottawa man faces 5 new terrorism charges
[KDR: Why no preliminary hearing? Why so secretive about the arrest and evidence? Is this another creation of a fake terrorist or is the evidence not as strong as it should be. Maybe the evidence was taken from people being tortured.]
Federal prosecutors have charged 25-year-old Mohammad Momin Khawaja with five additional terrorism-related offences for his alleged role in an international conspiracy.
Khawaja, the only person charged under Canada's anti-terrorism legislation, will also go straight to trial next year, justice department officials have confirmed.
The Ottawa-area software developer, who worked on contract for the Department of Foreign Affairs, has been in custody since his arrest in March 2004, and requests for bail have twice been rejected.
In additional to the new charges, prosecutors say they have also expanded two existing terrorism charges against Khawaja. They have not released any details.

The Canadian-born son of Pakistani immigrants has been interviewed by the RCMP, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and their counterparts in Britain and Pakistan.
However, there has been a publication ban on all court proceedings and all but the most basic facts related to his arrest.
A hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 6 to discuss a trial date. Prosecutors took advantage of a rarely used process called "direct indictment" to pre-empt a preliminary hearing that had been scheduled for Jan. 9.
Khawaja's lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, told the Ottawa Citizen that skipping the preliminary hearing is "abusive of an accused person's rights."
Greenspon said he spent a year preparing for such a hearing, which he said acts as a safeguard for defendants within Canada's justice system.
