Bolivia's leftist president-elect says he and his cabinet will cut their salaries by half to boost spending on social programs.
"This is a democratic revolution and we will answer the Bolivian people's call," Evo Morales said.
Morales, a 46-year-old coca grower and Aymara Indian, said the president and cabinet should shoulder more of the economic burden in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in South America.
The president's salary will be cut from the equivalent of about $4,200 Cdn per month to $2,100 Cdn. The funds saved as a result will be used to hire more staff in the fields of education and health care.
Cabinet ministers and members of the Movement to Socialism party are also expected to take similar pay cuts, Morales said Tuesday.
Morales won the presidential election on Dec. 18 and will be inaugurated on Jan. 22. He will be the country's first indigenous president.
Morales also pledged to cut restrictions on growing coca and nationalize the gas industry.
