And because of the Free Trade Agreement, the contract was awarded to a US subsidiary. That is worse. And the particular corporation awarded the May 2006 Canada Census is in fact a subsidiary of the colossal US armaments manufacturer Lockheed Martin. That is simply outrageous. This raises several disturbing matters, including the issue of personal privacy. The privacy assurances issued by Statistics Canada are far from reassuring. Many unanswered questions remain. Does the US Patriot Act compel a US subsidiary corporation to release private information about Canadians? The only way to have full confidence in the privacy of Canadians is not to contract out any part of the Census. In response to the contracting out of the Census, a new website, CountMeOut.ca has been launched. The website is filled with practical suggestions for "minimum cooperation" with the Census. Suggestions range from not submitting census information online over the internet as StatsCan urges, to opting for individual census forms for each member of a household, to placing stickers over the barcodes of census forms.
