CBC News || March 20, 2006
A day-care centre in Quebec has fired two workers after a 21-month-old girl was left alone inside the locked building before its scheduled closing time.
Firefighters had to break into CPE La Relève in Laval, just north of Montreal, to rescue the child.
The centre is usually open until 6:15 p.m., but employees had already closed up for the evening when the child's mother arrived just before 6 p.m. Tuesday
She found the doors locked and the lights off.
The woman called 911 and firefighters arrived a short time later. They broke in through a window and found the girl sleeping inside.

The head of the day-care centre has apologized, and its board has fired the two workers involved.
A similar case in Edmonton last winter led to the Alberta government closing down a day-care centre.
The Bearspaw Day Care Centre lost its licence to operate after two incidents in the space of a month.
In late January, a six-month-old boy with asthma was locked up alone for about three hours after staff went home for the night, thinking all the children had been picked up.
A few weeks later, a 20-month-old child was left alone in an outdoor playground in freezing temperatures. A neighbour heard the toddler crying and alerted staff before calling officials at the social services ministry.
