Canadian teens choosing TV less often
CBC News || April 03, 2006
Canadians, especially teens, are spending less time watching television, according to Statistics Canada.
A report released Friday shows a drastic drop in the time children aged 12 to 17 spent watching TV in the fall of 2004. The age group logged an average of 12.9 hours a week, down two hours from the same period in 2003.
The report said the drop could partly be attributed to the rise in internet use.
As well, when teenagers turned on the TV, they tended to watch foreign-produced programs. Canadian news and public affairs programs saw the sharpest deterioration in teen viewership.
The Canadian adult population spent 37.2 per cent of its viewing time on Canadian shows, down from 40.2 per cent the year before. The report blames most of this on one thing: cancellation of the NHL season.
The Statistics Canada survey suggests hockey fans may have turned to variety, game and reality TV shows. These programs took 15.2 per cent of viewing time compared with 12.9 per cent in 2003.

Other statistics uncovered by the survey:
* Drama and comedy took the largest share of viewing time, but 82 per cent of that time was spent on foreign programs.
* News and current affairs shows took the second largest share of viewing time, with Canadian shows attracting the most viewers.
* Men aged 18 to 24 watched the least TV (12.3 hours a week).
* Women over 60 watched the most (35.6 hours a week).
* People in New Brunswick spent the most time in front of the tube (23.7 hours a week).
* Alberta residents watched the least TV (19.4 hours a week).
Statistics Canada's numbers on television viewing come mainly from data acquired from BBM Canada – a not-for-profit, research company established in 1944 by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the Association of Canadian Advertisers.
BBM Canada collected its information from a diary-style questionnaire provided to households over four weeks during October and November 2004.
