Fox: Should We Torture People To Prevent Terror Attacks ?

Twisting logic to justify anti-American debauchery

Fox News continued their efforts to make jackbooted tyranny seem as normal as drinking a cup of coffee yesterday when it aired a segment asking if Zacarias Moussaoui should have been tortured in order to prevent 9/11.

Cavuto stand-in David Asman acted as devil's advocate while convicted criminal Oliver North played the 'good cop' in a completely framed debate. North argued that we shouldn't torture but should use 'harsh interrogation methods'. "For example, you say, "If you don't answer me, I'm going to take you out and shoot you."

It is important to clarify the context of even having a debate on this issue. Just asking the question itself gives the argument a legitimacy and normalizes it. It's like asking yourself, should I put my head into this meat grinder? The pretense is so bizarre that the debate is not necessary.

The agenda in even making the issue into a debate is to incrementally condition Americans to accept torture as a reasonable tool of anti-terrorism and ultimately law enforcement, until we end up with the Chinese model of torture extracted confessions for most crimes. By that point our legal system will resemble Uzbekistan, with a perfect 100% arrest to conviction rate.

Firstly, Zacarias Moussaoui contributed about as much to the 9/11 attack as Barney the purple dinosaur. He is a mentally unstable fall guy who has made so many conflicting statements that it wouldn't surprise me if he claimed to be the gunman on the grassy knoll.

Secondly, MSNBC reported that Moussaoui was made to wear a stun belt during his testimony and according to reporter Pete Williams, "he was very worried about doing anything that would cause those Marshals to press the button." This basically amounts to a torture extracted confession.

Asman has previously supported torture and death squads in Iraq. After North cited Jon McCain in arguing that torture didn't work, Asman got excited and responded with,

"The French, didn't they use torture effectively to find the Jackal the guy that was gonna kill the president of France?"

North agreed that torture had worked in that example.

"So it does work!" drooled Asman.

To pick apart the torture promoter's argument is in one sense a step too far because it means we have to engage these parasites on the level of their own foul delusion.

The Cavuto stand-in uses the logic of a terrorist who has information about an imminent nuclear attack. A terrorist we are to assume that isn't an agent of the US or British intelligence agencies as has been the case with every major attack for the past four decades.

Do you really entertain the notion that a psychopathic terrorist with the audacity to nuke a major city and slaughter untold millions is going squeal at the first sign of a cattle prod?

No, he's going to give false information and cause false leads to be followed, ensuring the attack has a greater chance of occurring.

Should we therefore go one step further and torture the guy's children? Maybe crush their genitals in a vice? Bush advisor John Yoo said such a measure was Constitutionally viable. We have a White House advisor advocating the crushing of children's genitals! Does Bush have to roast babies on the White House lawn before we take notice? Would his advisors ague that to be Constitutional? On the grounds that Bush can do whatever he likes because he is above the law?

As former associate editor of the Wall Street Journal and former Assistant Secretary of the US Treasury Dr. Paul Craig Roberts points out, the torture program was not set up to gain any kind of real information from accused detainees because torture is renowned for extracting useless and false information. The real reason for the torture is to make the terrorists implicate themselves and thus create the perception of a real terrorist threat.

Asman, Fox News and its ilk are helping make America the most hated country on earth and it is by design. The more terrorists they can recruit will lead far more of the public to support the vacuous amoral abyss of torture.
