The Horrors of the WTO and the Loss of More Sovereignty

The World Trade Organization (WTO) was established in 1995 a creation of The General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade (GATT). It goes well beyond GATT’s mandate as it not only covers trade in merchandise goods, but also services, telecommunications, and banking. In theory its purpose is to promote Free Trade by getting other countries to lift import tariffs and other barriers. It also oversees the rules of international trade and settles disputes between member nations with its decisions absolute and every member having to abide by its rulings. It has the power to impose sanctions against any country that does not comply. The true horror of the WTO is that it gives free reign and grants entrenched rights to the world’s largest banks and multi-national corporations. We are losing are ability to govern ourselves and control our own economic independence and the WTO has led to the loss of more sovereignty.
The WTO lacks any real democratic accountability with its hearings and trade disputes done in secret. Belonging to the WTO severely undermines a countries national sovereignty and allows for the domination of trade policies by multi-national corporations. Its true purpose is to essentially turn the whole world into a single market place. One where ruthless corporations reign supreme with all member nations bound by a single set of pro-business rules dictated by a powerful body of unelected burecrates. Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said that "transferring our sovereignty and decision making power to the WTO, to the United Nations, or any other international body is not in the long term interests of our people." For those who simply argue that the WTO is about Free Trade the reality it is nothing more then government managed trade benefits that serve corporate interests. Its nature is secretive and it has the power to overturn sovereign nation’s laws in areas of tax, labor,
environment, and consumer safety.
In his book The Globalization of Poverty and the New World Order, Michel Chossudovsky brings to light the triangular division of authority among the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the WTO. He states that, "the IMF had called for more effective surveillance of developing countries economic policies and increased coordination between the three international bodies.” What they are doing is eliminating all levels of public discourse and involvement. What we are witnessing is the real transfer of power from those elected by the people to those unelected, unaccountable, international burecrates run by the globalits and corporations. In many cases we are already powerless and bound by international treaties which even take precedence over our own laws. It has seen the U.S. change tax laws relating to Foreign Sales Corporations and also required Canada to mend its patent laws to correspond to Americas.

The way things are going we are unmistakably heading towards a single world market including in the area of agriculture. They are essentially monopolizing the production of seed and food on a global level which could be used to control and bring nations to its knees. This will mean the destruction of family run farms and the disappearance of rural communities. Journalist Susan George said that "if we get anything resembling what the World Trade Organization (WTO) wants then we're going to kill off an awful lot of small farmers." There is no stop to what the WTO wants to open up to foreign competition and this includes health care, education, and many other services. With the power to even over-rule nation’s laws in such matters this should concern people and raise some red flags. We need to wake up because our country is being hijacked as we give up more and more sovereignty.
Membership in the WTO brings about unwanted international meddling in countries domestic affairs. Our own laws should not be changed or overridden by a body of unelected burecrates. It serves as a middleman forcing countries to change its domestic laws that can then damage its economies and further erode its sovereignty. Many of its rulings have also been at the expense of the environment. Its very own rules are designed to favor the powerful industrialized countries at the expense of the weak and poor. Many who take the time to investigate and rationally look at what the WTO is really about are truly horrified and outraged. I first became aware of the WTO with the battle in Seattle in 1999 which saw the rise of the police state and the demonization of protesters. The WTO is but one piece of the puzzle in this ever growing global tyranny and the creation of a one world government.
