Canada Digs Iraq's Oil

Calgary-based Western Oil Sands is the latest Canadian company to announce that it is undertaking major operations to explore oil in the Kurdistan region of war-torn Iraq
After signing an initial memorandum of understanding with Iraqi officials in 2004, Western Oil Sands, who are better known for their partnership in the controversial and environmentally destructive Athabasca Oil Sands Project, have announced that they will be exploring for oil and gas in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
"We believe the size of the prize justifies the effort," said CEO James C. Houck during a teleconference call with the media Wednesday morning. The USD $45 million that Western Oil Sands will invest in the first four years is "modest...in terms of the size of the prize which we've captured." Houck added that all of the necessary security precautions will be taken, and that democracy will one day flourish in Iraq, stating that Western Oil Sands "firmly believes that the current political unrest will be resolved."

When the U.S. and it's 'coalition of the willing' invaded Iraq in 2003, it was widely believed that control over and access to Iraq's oil wealth was a key motivating factor in the decision to wage the illegal and almost universally deplored war. Canada was lauded by those opposed for not contributing troops, although a recent article in Maclean's magazine states that, contrary to popular media portrayals, Canada has been "deeply involved" in Iraq militarily and otherwise since the invasion.
Western Oil Sands joins Addax Petroleum Corporation, another Canadian-based oil company that has extensive interests in Iraq's Kurdistan region, and enjoys favorable relations with the U.S. backed government.
