Iran, Syria sign defence agreement

World Iran's Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar and visiting Syrian counterpart Hassan Turkmani signed an agreement Thursday to expand defence cooperation, the defence ministry said.

In a letter of agreement, the two sides "stressed on strengthening mutual ties and the necessity to preserve peace and stability in the region, as well as ridding the region of weapons of mass destruction", it said in a statement.

Turkmani started a four-day official visit to Tehran on Sunday.

Iran, locked in a dispute with the international community over its disputed nuclear programme, is a close ally of Syria, which Washington charges is a supporter of terrorism and seeking weapons of mass destruction.

During his trip, Turkmani has also met with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Islamic republic's military chiefs.
