A man suspected of having ties to terrorist groups has been deported from Montreal to India, his lawyer has told the Montreal Gazette.
Bachan Singh Sogi was removed from a detention centre in Montreal Sunday morning, said Mai Nguyen.
Supporters had been trying to stop the move because of fears Sogi would be tortured upon arrival back in India.
"We know that he's been removed from the prison and that's all we know," said Laura Shevchenko, one of the activists trying to halt the deportation, to CBC News.
Amnesty International and human rights groups in India plan to monitor the situation, she said.
Canadian security authorities say Sogi is a member of Babbar Khalsa International, a group fighting for an independent Sikh homeland in the northern Indian state of Punjab.

Police in India allege he plotted to assassinate senior officials in Punjab. Singh has denied the allegations.
On June 28, Stockwell Day, Canada's public security minister, refused an application to stay Sogi's deportation, despite a request from the United Nations committee against torture to delay the deportation while it examines the case.
The Federal Court of Canada on June 23 refused to put Sogi's removal order on hold.
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service says Sogi, 45, arrived in Toronto on May 8, 2001 and claimed refugee status, later moving to Montreal.
CSIS says there are reasonable grounds to believe he is actually Gurnam Singh, alias Piare Singh, a member of Babbar Khalsa.
