The Moncton SPCA won't let a Kent County woman adopt a cat because she hasn't neutered her dog.
Ford Bank resident Sherry Hessel is an animal lover with two horses and a dog, a purebred chocolate Lab.
A woman at the SPCA "wanted to know if the dog was registered," Hessel said. "She wanted me to fax papers. I felt they were delving into personal territory that was totally unrelated to the adoption of a cat."
Hessel is frustrated that an overcrowded SPCA would turn down a legitimate application. She said the fact that her dog is not neutered isn't a valid reason to deny a homeless cat a good place to live.
Victoria Craig, the executive director of the Moncton SPCA, said their policy is to deny adoption to people who have pets that aren't neutered or spayed, unless the applicant shows the animal is a registered breed.
"If you're not currently fixing your animals and there are no health reasons you're not getting it done, that shows a lack of responsibility," she said.
Craig did say that the policy will be under review soon, however, and could be changed.
