VANCOUVER -- A 40-year-old man has been charged in an alleged bomb threat to the British Consulate in Vancouver.
Shirwa Osman Malcolm Shirwa, of no fixed address, was charged Friday with one count of making a hoax regarding terrorist activity.
Vancouver police received a 911 call Aug. 15 regarding plans to carry out an attack on the consulate in the city's downtown core by means of explosives carried by car.
Officers from across the Lower Mainland were mobilized for a 48-hour period.
The RCMP and police investigated to identify the supposed suspects as well as the 911 caller and determined the threat was a hoax.
"We take these types of complaints very seriously and that's why the RCMP and Vancouver police department dedicated a combined 40 police officers to this investigation," said Insp. Lloyde Plante.
"All the resources required to bring this investigation to a successful conclusion were used," he said.
Plante reminded the public that lodging false or malicious complaints carries serious consequences.
"The government of Canada recognized the seriousness of making false complaints when it enacted this legislation," said Plante.
