Cuts could cost tax centre jobs: Knowledge Driven Revolution

The spending cuts announced by the federal government this week will likely cost the Summerside Tax Centre 57 jobs.

The threatened jobs are for the people who run the visitor rebate program, which gives a GST tax refund to tourists. The Harper government says it will save almost $79 million by axing the program.

The program is handled entirely at the Summerside Tax Centre.

Mayor Basil Stewart talked about the losses at a meeting of the Summerside Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night. He said the loss of any jobs is a blow to the local economy, and the tax centre jobs pay well.

Stewart says he'll wait for the official word before requesting a meeting with federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

Provincial Tourism Minister Philip Brown has already complained that cutting the tax rebate is a disincentive for foreign travellers, and comes at a bad time as visitor numbers to Canada from the U.S. are already falling.
