Canadians will likely have to show their health cards or drivers' licences before being allowed to vote in the next federal election.
The Conservative government on Tuesday introduced proposed legislation that would require voters to present photo identification at federal polling stations.
"Electoral fraud largely remains an exception, but that doesn't mean we can't improve the system," Tory House leader Rob Nicholson told reporters.
The proposed changes to the Elections Act would require voters to either present the ID cards or show two pieces of identification confirming their addresses. Without such identification, voters will have to legally attest that they are who they say they are.
The bill also gives candidates the right to campaign in shopping centres and gated residential communities.
