The government has introduced legislation to raise the salaries of members of the legislature to 75 per cent of the pay level of their federal counterparts. Currently, Ontario politicians earn a base pay of $86,860, compared with the $147,700 paid to federal members who represent the same ridings. If the bill passes, members of the legislature will earn a base salary of just over $110,000 a year - a raise of nearly $24,000. Ontario's integrity commissioner has warned the provincial legislature could soon become a "farm team" for the House of Commons if salaries weren't raised. NDP House Leader Peter Kormos was kicked out of the legislature for railing against the surprise move by the Liberals to raise the pay levels. Kormos calls it the height of hypocrisy, especially with the public furor over former Hydro One CEO Tom Parkinson's $3-million severance package. Read the full article here Broken Link?
