2 Vancouver officers suspended for 'trophy photo'
CBC News via StopLying.ca
January 29, 2007
Vancouver Police Chief Jamie Graham said Thursday two officers have been suspended and two others reprimanded for making a "trophy photo" of a break and enter suspect at the city jail last November.
Police launched an internal investigation of the incident after another officer notified the chief about the photograph, which shows four officers posing with the suspect, who is wearing a white jumpsuit.
One officer is seen holding the suspect, 40-year-old Martin James Wiegelt, by his ponytail.
He had just been arrested in the city's Southlands area on Nov. 5, 2006.
Graham said the investigation concluded that the officers' actions were wrong, and they have been disciplined.
"The sergeant who directed the photo was placed on administrative leave at the time and has since received a three-day suspension without pay. The second member who played an active role in helping to pose the prisoner was given a one-day suspension without pay. The other two members received verbal reprimands."
Wiegelt had also claimed he was beaten before being taken to the jail. But Graham said an investigation into the use of excessive force has already cleared the officers of that allegation.
He said the officers involved co-operated with the investigation and have expressed their regret for their treatment of the suspect.
"I know that the motives of the members involved were not malicious, just misguided. Our people did a bad thing. But they were doing their job and doing it extraordinarily well when they arrested one of the most wanted criminals in the city."
Graham said he is satisfied there will be no recurrences of the officers' behaviour.
