B.C. Ferries considering random security checks of passengers
Bill Cleverley - CanWest News Service
April 4, 2007
Random security checks of B.C. Ferries passengers and vehicles are a possibility as the corporation continues to beef up security measures, says CEO David Hahn.
But passengers shouldn’t expect airport-like security at ferry terminals any time soon.
“I don’t see anything that we’re going to do that will impact anybody’s departure times,” Mr. Hahn said Tuesday.
New Transport Canada regulations are expected this fall and Hahn said B.C. Ferries will do whatever those regulations dictate.
In the case of increased threat levels — such as a bomb on a Washington State ferry or a B.C. ferry — more extensive screening of passengers and vehicles might be necessary, and B.C. Ferries would be negligent if it didn’t plan for such a possibility, he said.
“The idea of screening everybody is only related to if there’s a major event. The idea of screening everybody, is, from my perspective, hopefully a never event. Because that means nothing has happened to trigger it,” Mr. Hahn said.
In the meantime, B.C. Ferries has already embarked on a program of enhancing security at terminals.
“We’ve installed cameras. We’ve put on more locks. We’ve got a stronger and more enforced employee identification program. We’ve got new uniforms for our employees so they stand out. We’re going to do a lot more around general security measures.”
Shortly after the terrorist attacks on the London train system in 2005 Mr. Hahn said B.C. Ferries would have to upgrade its security measures and has been quietly going about doing just that.
“I don’t see wholesale changes unless Transport Canada comes out with a significant rule change, which they could do in the fall but we don’t expect,” he said.
"There may be limited screening issues. There may be some people that would maybe have to go through a process different from the rest but I would expect it to be random. On the other hand if there’s a specific event — ferry related, terrorist orientated — then what would people expect us to do?” People will accept and respect additional inspections if they’re warranted, he said.
He said it’s not uncommon for people to be randomly pulled aside for extra scrutiny while travelling abroad and a similar system could be implemented at B.C. Ferries.
“I would say a computer-generated type of random selection type of thing is possible,” he said, adding it all depends on what the new Transport Canada rules are.
“We’ll do whatever the rules and regulations are but our intent, and I think their intent, is to keep this very manageable but to have something in place so that if something does occur, people can immediately get confidence back in the system to travel.”
