The Theory of Altruistic Government
Brent Jessop - Knowledge Driven Revolution.com July 18, 2007
What is The Theory of Altruistic Government? In short, it is the irrational belief that the government will do what they promised to do because they were elected to do it.
For us non-believers, this notion is quite silly. Government has never answered to those who vote for them, they have much more important paymasters to answer to then the electorate. But for some reason The Theory of Altruistic Government persists in many sectors of society.
Now here is a tip for those who are starting to question their faith: when the government supports an idea, it is bad. Simple and useful.
A great way to figure out if the people you just elected are as altruistic as you are, is to check out what they actually do once you have elected them. The downside of this is it will take some patience on your part. The upside is that you will learn something.
Now lets apply this to something very fashionable. How about global warming? Remember, when the government supports an idea, it is bad.
Altruistic Government promises: “We will fight the scourge of global warming, to save the planet for our children and our children’s children.”
Altruistic Government does: “The Port of Vancouver in Canada said Monday it would use its existing truck licensing program to impose stringent safety and emissions standards on trucks serving its marine terminals.”
Wow! They really are Altruistic! Well, no. They are not. They will even tell you themselves. All you have to do is read a little past the first paragraph and... “The policy is designed to steer drivers to become employees at larger fleets that are better capitalized to make equipment upgrades.”
Woops, not so altruistic, eh?
The Theory of Altruistic Government is not just a dysfunction of the make-believe left. The make-believe right are just as faithful. Don’t forget: when the government supports an idea, it is bad.
Altruistic Government says: “Canada and the USA enjoy a free trade agreement for the benefit of all”
Do we really have free trade like the Altruistic Government says we do? Here is a personal example. Not that long ago I bought some soap from a small supplier in the US and had it shipped to me in Canada. This may surprise the believers, but I had to pay a hefty fee to get my package of soap out of the government’s hands. Does that sound like free trade? If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, it works with books too. Do you think that the truck loads of junk Wal-Mart ships across the border have to pay these fees? Hey, who voted for the guys who signed all these free trade agreements?
If you or anyone you know is suffering form the deeply held belief in The Theory of Altruistic Government do not panic. You are not alone. Small doses of reality are the only known cure. Unfortunately, many are allergic to such a remedy and may react with extreme bouts of denial.
