NDP use puppets to condemn regulation allowing asbestos in toys

A pair of New Democrat MPs played puppeteers on Thursday as they condemned a government regulation allowing the use of asbestos in toys as "crazy."
Pat Martin and Catherine Bell used the floppy puppets and falsetto voices in an unusual news conference in which they urged the government to ban asbestos completely as a deadly carcinogen.
The puppets, Toxic Timmy and Ms. O'Thelioma, were the highlights of a jaw-dropping episode rarely seen on Parliament Hill.
Mesothelioma is a cancer associated with exposure to asbestos.
A set of regulations published in the Canada Gazette last fall includes one that says certain kinds of asbestos can be used in toys as long as the material cannot become airborne. The entry pulled together five existing regulations into one.
A spokesperson for Health Canada said there are no toys sold in Canada that contain asbestos.
"There's no purpose or reason to use asbestos in a toy," Jirina Vlk said.
Vlk said there are legitimate industrial uses for asbestos which is safe as long as its fibres do not become airborne where they can be inhaled.
Martin complained that the government promotes the use of the mineral abroad in order to support the remaining Canadian asbestos mines in Quebec.
He called it "corporate welfare for corporate serial killers."
