The theft of a Children's Wish Foundation donation box put an eastern P.E.I. man in jail Thursday.
Lloyd Wilfred Ellis, 29, stole the box from the counter of a gas station in Murray River in January. He was caught on a security camera and ended up in court in Georgetown.
Ellis told authorities there was only $4 in the box and that he was embarrassed.
"Let's see how embarrassed you are," provincial court Judge Nancy Orr said during sentencing.
"How much money do you have on you?"
Ellis pulled $25 out of his pocket, and Orr told him he'd just made a donation to the Children's Wish Foundation. She sentenced Ellis to 15 days in jail and a year on probation. Orr also ordered him to write a letter of apology to the charity.
"You certainly stoop to a low level when you start stealing from a charitable organization", she said.
Ellis got an extra 30 days in jail for failing to attend Turning Point, a counselling group for men dealing with anger problems.
